Dear Friends in Christ,
Many exciting things are happening in the life of our church family! As we begin to look to 2010, it’s time to discern and declare our commitments for the coming year.
I love the theme for this year’s stewardship campaign: Mission Possible! It boldly proclaims the idea that God has given us a mission to accomplish and that this mission is achievable. We’ve been invited by God to partner with him and respond to the needs of this community and around and world with the love of Christ. Will you join us in taking on this mission?
The Session has approved an Asking Budget that some may consider to be a challenge in these difficult financial times. Rest assured that your Session has prayerfully and thoroughly reviewed this budget, and recognizes that this mission will require the commitment of everyone in our church family. I believe we are up to the challenge, and am eager to see how the Lord will lead all of us to greater sacrifice and service. Do you remember the old TV series, Mission Impossible, or one of the more recent films of the same name? In both the TV series and the films, there was always that line, “Your mission, should you choose to accept it is….” The mission would be delivered and then self destruct. Friends, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to earnestly and prayerfully determine your commitment to the ministry and mission of WHPC for 2010.
The mission is indeed possible, but it’s up to each one of us; it’s up to you and to me. Please pray about your commitment, and let us know what that commitment will be for the coming year no later than Sunday November 1st. Enclosed you will find a card for your use in letting us know what your commitment will be. You will notice there is a place for you to register your financial commitment as well as your commitment of time and talents to worship, learning, service and mission. God wants all we are, not just our money.
New winds of optimism are blowing in our church. I believe the Holy Spirit is doing a new thing among us, and I feel privileged to join with you in this great adventure of faith. Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go! …And surely I will be with you to the very end of the age” (Mt. 28:16-20). We undertake this mission with the mandate of our Lord confident in His power and assured of His presence to help us accomplish the task. May we be faithful to His mission of love.
Your servant in Christ,
Peter B. Barnes
