The offices of Elder and Deacon are equal in stature and importance in the life of our Church. However, they differ in function and nature of service. All officers serve after the pattern of the one “who came not to be served, but to serve.” ~ Matthew 20:28.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF ELDERS
Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, Elders exercise leadership, government, discipline and responsibility for the life of WHPC. Elders are members of the Session, and it is their duty, individually and jointly, to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation. (Book of Order, G-6.0300). Other commitments of Elders include attending monthly Session meetings, participating in a specific ministry area, attending training and Elder retreats, attending Congregational and Presbytery meetings, serving communion, supporting stewardship of spiritual gifts, time and monetary resources, and participating in church events. Elder assignments include leadership responsibility in a ministry area within one of the five Divisions - the Discipleship, Community, Mission, Worship, and Support Services. Some of the ministry areas are Adult, Youth, Children and Preschool ministries, Facilities, Personnel, Finance, Stewardship, Evangelism, Global Missions, Local and Regional Missions, Membership, Nominating and Worship. Our Session is composed of 20 Elders who each serve three year rotating terms.
